Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation

In the Sacrament of Confirmation, The Holy Spirit, whom we first received at Baptism, comes to us in a deeper way. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world.  . . .  We receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service.

Confirmation of Children

Confirmation is usually conferred to children in the eighth or ninth grade in our diocese. At this time, we do not offer Confirmation for Children and instead refer them to nearby parishes that do offer Confirmation Preparation for children.

Preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation includes:

  • The parents of the child are registered members of our parish
  • The child has been baptized, celebrated his/her First Reconciliation and received First Holy Communion
  • The child lives in a family that practices the Catholic faith, attending Mass and receiving Holy Communion weekly
  • The child has attended two consecutive years of formal religious education or faith formation prior to being confirmed
  • The child attends a parish-based confirmation preparation program
  • The child has one adult Catholic who will serve as a sponsor
  • Assessment of readiness by the child and the Director of Faith Formation/Pastor

Confirmation of Adults

Many times, adults come to us who have not previously received the Sacrament of Confirmation and now wish to complete their sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist). This is a very common situation, and we are happy to assist the adult with his/her faith journey. Because every situation is different, it's best to talk to us about your options for Confirmation. Here are some of the readiness signs we look for:

  • You are registered as a member of our parish, contributing your time, talent or treasure to our community
  • You have a good understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation and what it means in your life as a Catholic
  • You are attending Mass every Sunday and have celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • You have one adult Catholic who will serve as your sponsor
  • You have interviewed with the Director of Faith Formation/Pastor
  • You have attended the preparation (OCIA or catechetical instruction) as recommended by the Director
